HAINES JUNCTION, YT, April 24, 2026 – Parks Canada and the Kluane National Park Management Board are working to protect the declining population of Dall’s sheep at Thechàl Dhâl’, also known as Sheep Mountain.

Two closures are in effect in the Thechàl Dhâl’ area of Kluane National Park and Reserve to minimize disturbance to sheep:

  • The Thechàl Dhâl’ Ridge Route area (yellow area on the map) is closed to all access during lambing season from May 1 to June 15. Dogs are prohibited in this area at all times.
  • The face of Thechàl Dhâl’ (red area on the map) protects sensitive sheep habitat and is closed year-round to all public access. Dogs are also prohibited in this area.

Status of Thechàl Dhâl’ sheep

Parks Canada has been monitoring Dall’s sheep in the park since 1977. Sheep surveys in 2025 show that the number of adult sheep remain below historical averages. This is in part due to the extremely low numbers of lambs counted from 2019 to 2022.

Where we can make a difference

Research has shown that the presence of people and dogs can disrupt activities that are important to a sheep’s survival, like foraging, resting, and taking care of young. The seasonal closure of the Thechàl Dhâl’ Ridge Route area helps protect Dall’s sheep during lambing season, a particularly vulnerable time for ewes and lambs, while still providing opportunities for people to hike in the area when sheep are less susceptible to disturbance.

Sheep are also vulnerable to collisions with vehicles on the Alaska Highway at the base of Thechàl Dhâl’. Please observe the 60 km/h speed zone and drive with caution in this area.

Hiking and sheep viewing

We are focused on protecting and conserving wildlife while enabling safe and enjoyable visitor experiences in protected places. During lambing season, alternate hikes in the area include Sheep Creek Trail, Bullion Plateau, Soldier’s Summit, and Shepherd’s Knoll. Consider leaving your dog at home, and if you do bring a dog to areas open for hiking, always keep them on a leash and under control.

Sheep are often visible from the Thechàl Dhâl’ Visitor Centre, Soldier’s Summit and Shepherd’s Knoll. Bring binoculars and give sheep lots of space.

By working together, we can help protect wildlife. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
